Circular Motion Lab (Orange: 1/28 Black: 1/31)

Today I checked WS 2 for my period 5 class and gave them quiz #1.  Periods 2,4,6 had the second quiz.  I talked about how we can go from objects traveling in a straight line to objects moving in a circular pattern.  Periods 2,4,6 played "broomball", then all classes did the Circular Motion Station Lab.

I also announced the date for the next test.  Period 5 will have the projectile motion test on 2/3, and Periods 2,4,6 will have the test on 2/4

Ski Jumping Lab (Black: 1/27)

We did the Wii Fit Ski Jump lab and watched the following Newton's Apple clip.

I gave a quiz on WS #1 and will give a quiz on WS #2 at the next block.

First Day of Second Semester (Black: 1/25 Orange: 1/26)

Mr. Myers took over my 2nd and 4th period classes, but he more or less did the same things that I did. I reviewed the Unit IVb test and gave a practice quiz on projectile motion. The real quiz will be on Thursday. Most of the period was spent doing a simulation of projectile motion (simulation found here), followed by a bit of class time for homework.

End of Unit 4b and Semester (Black: 1/11 Orange: 1/12)

I went over Worksheet 3 (except 4th period), but the answers can also be found here.  I also stamped and went over problem #4 on the Unit IVb Review Sheet.  The remaining answers can be found here (after school on 1/12/11).  We also graded quiz #1 and took quiz #2.  Most of the period was spent assembling homework packets and organizing notebooks.

The test has 25 multiple choice questions and one "Show Your Work" page.  The practice test is all "Show Your Work", but the multiple choice questions may be based on some of the questions on the practice test.

HW:  Study for test (Thurday for periods 2,4,6 and Friday for period 5); Assemble HW packet (Due on Test day); organize notebook (due on "Final Day")

Average Vs. Instantaneous Velocity

Students took a quiz on WS 1, then corrected WS 2 (answers here).  We did a lab that measured students reaction times as a meter stick was dropped.  It was found that the average reaction time for students would allow for a dollar bill to completely drop through one's fingers before they had time to react to it.  At the end of the period we compared average vs. instantaneous velocity.  The method for calculating them is the same, the difference being the time interval over which you do the calculations.  With instantaneous velocity the time interval is short, and centered on the time you are interested in.

Ramp'n Roll (Black: 1/5 Orange: 1/6)

I checked the homework and gave the answers for WS 1.  I also did selected problems in class.  There will be a quiz on the worksheet the next block.  Complete answers can be found here.  I gave time for students to complete the Ramp'n Roll online activity, then we discussed position-time, velocity-time and acceleration-time graphs for the types of motion we have studied so far.

Acceleration Due to Gravity

We did the Acceleration Due to Gravity lab then worked on WS 1 in class.  Many people got stamps on it in class.  If you did not, finishing it will be homework.

HW:  Descriptions and predictions for Ramp-n-roll problems 1-9 (starts on page 2)-- period 5 does not need to do this for HW.  Finish WS 1.
